Sandbags prove utterly ineffective

Lanarkshire evening post

Residents based in Penwortham have been stranded after torrential downpours flooded their street. Neighbours, Peter Vickers, Dave Buller and Shirley Walker of Higher Croft, Penwortham, Preston, have been left high and dry and are upset after complaining about the situation to South Ribble Borough Council and Lancashire County Council. They say their complaints fell on deaf ears leaving Shirley marooned and Dave facing a hefty bill.

62-year-old Peter, said: “Every time we have heavy rain this happens, it has been going on for at least 10 years but when we report it all they send are sandbags”.

Fluvial Innovations comment:

This is further evidence to demonstrate that sandbags do not work as flood protection.

Problems with sandbags:

  • Time consuming and labour intensive to assemble into flood defences
  • Prone to leakage
  • Can only be used once, not reusable
  • Viral and bacterial infections often present in flood water get transposed onto the porous hessian sacks.
