Welsh Government must raise flood awareness

Jun 21 2012 by Ian Hughes, North Wales Weekly News

FLOOD awareness should be top of the agenda for the Welsh Government according to an Assembly Member.

According to Darren Millar, AM for Clwyd West, focus should be increased on flood protection at caravan parks in Conwy. The call comes as communities across Wales begin the long recovery progress after devastating floods in west Wales where a number of holiday parks were affected.

Mr Millar said awareness should be raised in Abergele, Towyn and Kinmel Bay – an area that provides over 50,000 bed spaces every summer.

“Floods can be devastating and difficult to predict. It’s critical that those with caravans in flood risk areas are aware of what to do if an emergency situation arises.

“The floods in west Wales show just how vulnerable caravan parks can be in a flood situation and the Welsh Government must re-double its efforts to educate holiday parks and caravan owners in places such as Towyn and Kinmel Bay about flood risks.”
